Maybe you see a way to relieve yourself or to rid yourself of the source of your distress, but you don\u2019t want to do it for some reason.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt;\">For instance, maybe you\u2019re in a marriage with someone who abuses you emotionally. They don\u2019t leave physical marks on you, but they berate you and make you feel worthless.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt;\">These kinds of situations happen all too often. Coworkers, friends, and family members may not necessarily know what\u2019s going on, though.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt;\">If you\u2019re experiencing acute emotional distress, maybe that\u2019s because a beloved pet just died. You\u2019re finding it painful, but you expect that you will get past that pain eventually.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt;\">Ongoing emotional distress usually harms you more than the acute variety. That\u2019s because, if you have acute emotional distress, you will likely feel that you can get past it once a little time passes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt;\">You\u2019re in pain at the moment, but you will probably accept that it\u2019s a natural part of life. You can expect to feel better eventually.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt;\">If you\u2019re experiencing ongoing emotional distress, though, that\u2019s a much more hopeless feeling. You might sleep more than normal or not enough.
