While there may be no limit to long-term memory, short-term memory is not so capacious.<\/p>\n

Four chunks of information \u2014 whether words, numbers or whatever \u2014 is the human limit.<\/p>\n

Even then, short-term memory only lasts around 15 to 30 seconds.<\/p>\n

Professor Gordon Parker, author of the paper, said:<\/p>\n

\u201cSo to remember a seven numeral phone number, say 6458937, we need to break it into four chunks: 64. 58. 93. 7.<\/p>\n

Basically four is the limit to our perception.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s a big difference for a paper that is one of the most highly referenced psychology articles ever \u2013 nearly a 100 percent discrepancy.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
