color: #464646; font-size: 1.20em; line-height: 1.3em; margin-bottom: 10px; padding-bottom: 8px;\">The study of 32,000 nurses is the largest ever to look at the link between <a href=\"https:\/\/theprivateclinic.me\/en\/posts\/mental-health\/understanding-depression-symptoms-types-causes-diagnosis-and-treatment\/\">depression<\/a> and chronotype.<\/p>\n<p>Women who go to bed early and rise early are less likely to develop <a href=\"https:\/\/theprivateclinic.me\/en\/posts\/mental-health\/understanding-depression-symptoms-types-causes-diagnosis-and-treatment\/\">depression<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Studies have also found that both men and women who are \u2018early birds\u2019 have a lower <a href=\"https:\/\/theprivateclinic.me\/en\/posts\/mental-health\/understanding-depression-symptoms-types-causes-diagnosis-and-treatment\/\">depression<\/a> risk.<\/p>\n<p>This study of 32,000 nurses is the largest ever to look at the link between <a href=\"https:\/\/theprivateclinic.me\/en\/posts\/mental-health\/understanding-depression-symptoms-types-causes-diagnosis-and-treatment\/\">depression<\/a> and chronotype.<\/p>\n<p>Chronotype is the technical term for whether you are naturally early to bed and early to rise, or late to bed and late to rise \u2014 or, somewhere in between.<\/p>\n<p>Among the nurses, 53 percent described themselves as intermediate, 10% as evening types and 37 percent as early risers.<\/p>\n<p>The women were followed for four years to see who developed <a href=\"https:\/\/theprivateclinic.me\/en\/posts\/mental-health\/understanding-depression-symptoms-types-causes-diagnosis-and-treatment\/\">depression<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Dr C\u00e9line Vetter, the study\u2019s first author, explained the results:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cOur results show a modest link between chronotype and <a href=\"https:\/\/theprivateclinic.me\/en\/posts\/mental-health\/understanding-depression-symptoms-types-causes-diagnosis-and-treatment\/\">depression<\/a> risk.<\/p>\n<p>This could be related to the overlap in genetic pathways associated with chronotype and mood.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The increased risk for evening types was between 12 percent to 27 percent.<\/p>\n<p>This was after other risk factors had been taken into account, such as being a smoker and having an erratic sleep pattern.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Vetter said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThis tells us that there might be an effect of chronotype on <a href=\"https:\/\/theprivateclinic.me\/en\/posts\/mental-health\/understanding-depression-symptoms-types-causes-diagnosis-and-treatment\/\">depression<\/a> risk that is not driven by environmental and lifestyle factors.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Genetics plays a fairly large role in whether you are an early bird or a night owl.<\/p>\n<p>However, there are other factors,\u00a0Dr Vetter said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cAlternatively, when and how much light you get also influences chronotype, and light exposure also influences <a href=\"https:\/\/theprivateclinic.me\/en\/posts\/mental-health\/understanding-depression-symptoms-types-causes-diagnosis-and-treatment\/\">depression<\/a> risk.<\/p>\n<p>Disentangling the contribution of light patterns and genetics on the link between chronotype and <a href=\"https:\/\/theprivateclinic.me\/en\/posts\/mental-health\/understanding-depression-symptoms-types-causes-diagnosis-and-treatment\/\">depression<\/a> risk is an important next step.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The study does\u00a0<em>not\u00a0<\/em>tell us that all night owls are doomed to be depressed and there are also ways of lowering the risk.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Vetter advises:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cBeing an early type seems to beneficial, and you can influence how early you are.<\/p>\n<p>Try to get enough sleep, exercise, spend time outdoors, dim the lights at night, and try to get as much light by day as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The study was published in the <em>Journal of Psychiatric Research<\/em> (<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1016\/j.jpsychires.2018.05.022\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vetter et al., 2018<\/a>).<\/p>\n<div class=\"author-info\">\n<div class=\"author-avatar\">\n<img alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.spring.org.uk\/wp-content\/litespeed\/avatar\/d5bdb00cc6e37553afd1606674f4bf6e.jpg?ver=1740134756\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.spring.org.uk\/wp-content\/litespeed\/avatar\/0e134e3a53e4ff2237ad971b4d612e7f.jpg?ver=1740134756 2x\" class=\"avatar avatar-42 photo\" height=\"42\" width=\"42\" decoding=\"async\"\/><\/div>\n<div class=\"author-description\">\n<h2 class=\"author-title\"><span class=\"author-heading\">Author:<\/span> Dr Jeremy Dean<\/h2>\n<p class=\"author-bio\">\nPsychologist, Jeremy Dean, PhD is the founder and author of PsyBlog.
